Considering the car can qualify for up to $10,000 in rebates in certain areas ($7500 federal rebate and up to $2500 in some state incentives), consumers could possibly rake in one of these electric cars for just under $20,000.
Ghosn, speaking to a group of journalists at the Detroit auto show, said that moving the Leaf’s production to Tennessee allowed for the company to drop the starting price so drastically. The new 2013 Nissan Leaf S trim has 16-inch steel wheels and goes without the other Leaf trims’ GPS navigation system, cruise control, and Carwings telematics. Other Leaf trims see price reductions, as well. The 2013 Nissan Leaf SV now starts at $32,670 (down $3280 from the 2012 model) and the 2013 Leaf SL carries a $35,690 base price ($2410 down from last year’s MSRP).
Additional 2013 Leaf options include the Charger package on the S, $1300; LED headlight and quick charger pack on the SV, $1,630; and the Premium package on SV and SL, which includes Nissan’s Around View Monitor system and a seven-speaker Bose stereo for $1050.
Other factors have helped the company lower the Leaf’s starting price.
